Requirements
Pearson requires that all media content must be played in an accessible media player. To be considered accessible, the player must meet the following conditions:
- Player controls must be keyboard accessible. This includes navigating to and activating the control buttons with typical key presses such as Tab, Space or Enter, and arrow keys; having logical Tab order for navigating the controls; and ensuring no keyboard traps.
- Keyboard focus indicator must be visible.
- Player controls must have accessible names – for the player itself and each control in the player.
- Provide sufficient contrast between colors for text (at least 4.5:1 ratio) and controls (at least 3:1 ratio).
- Have closed caption and audio description functionality.
Additional accessibility functionality that enhances the user experience but is not required includes:
- Ability to turn on transcripts and display in a transcript drawer under the video
- Interactive transcripts
- Functionality to download a copy of the transcript
- Changing the speed of the video
- Ability to change the settings on how captions are displayed (e.g., text style, text size, position of captions).
Multimedia Interactives (MMI)
The Pearson MMI player was built accessible and is the preferred media player.
Smart Pearson Player (SPP)
The SPP is also accessible but utilizes older technology and will be retired sometime in 2024. Details to be announced.
